the Mihrabs, the Minarat and the Qubas what does Islam say about these? By SHAIKH ABU ABDUR-RAHMAN YAHYA SILMY BIN M. NUBAR AS-SAYLANI AS-SALAFI AS-ATHARI (hafizahullaah) All those matters which Allah and his Prophet Muhammed Sallahu Alaihi wassallum have explained in the Qur’aan and Sunnah have to be accepted as it was given. Any changes, modifications, alterations etc.. would lead to the change of the law which have been given to us. Thus all the matters which has been dealt by the Qur’aan and Sunnah have no right for anyone to use their own rational or any other methodology to base or explain them. When Allah has made a particular action to be rewarded it should be kept to the laws which Allah has applied to us in the texts of Qur’aan and Sunnah. We cannot utilize the Qur’aan and Sunnah again to merge any other fundamentals or basics to make the matter to be rewarded. Building a mosque is an action to which Allah has granted us reward and if we are to ensure this reward with Allah we should keep to the methodology given to us and not walk out of it even though the Shaitaan would like to mislead us with certain other texts and verses to let one polish the action look like a benefit. When the Prophet Muhammad Sallahu Alaihi wassallum has clearly shown to us how to build a mosque it is not for us to organize this and make it more Islamic from our own methodologies although it may look Islamic due to evidences being placed from the texts of Qur’aan and Sunnah. As long as an action which is not in the structure of the mosque in the fundamentals of Qur’aan and Sunnah's teachings and are going to be utilized as the basics, fundamentals, or any means to promote a mosque then it comes to the category of getting into the innovations. When a matter is being used in the mosque as the fans, doors, windows, cement, roof tilling ,etc.. does not get into the category of innovations as they are not the basics, fundamentals or any other means to realize through it that particular building as a mosque. So utilizing these matters does not have any contradiction or sin in a mosque. But Mihraab (The area where a particular place is made for the Imam), Minarat (The tower), Qubbah (The Tomb) are all among the innovations added in the structure of the Mosque. Things which have been forbidden are once again not allowed to be used either it be in the mosque or out of it. Allah knows the best.
